“We Did Not Impose Curfew On Ketu Residents” - Ketu Police Station

Adjekpagbon Blessed Mudiaga

Complaints by some Lagosians residing between Ile-ile and Iyana School bus stops along the popular Ikorodu Road, Ketu, Lagos, that Mr. AkpanAniefiok, the new Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ketu Police Station has imposed a curfew that people should not move as from 10pm has been refuted by a senior police officer working in the station.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity during a fact finding mission by Bulkybon Periscopes
at the Ketu Police station on Wednesday 27 April, a senior police officer said the allegation is false.
He said, “It is terrible that the same people who reported to us that some questionable characters usually commit crime between 10 – 11pm by snatching ladies’ bags are the same people complaining again of raiding the areas concerned.”
When asked whether it is now a crime to move about as from 10pm, he said, “There is no law about “wandering” anymore as it used to be some years ago. So, there is no basis to ask people not to freely move as long as they are not committing any crime.”
As regards the raids carried out by the police whereby some innocent people were arrested, he explained that, “We carry out raid anywhere any time we receive information about criminal activities in an area. Some streets where criminals tend to operate mostly in Ikosi-Ketu area include Oluwalogbon, Aladelolola and CMD road.
“After raiding, we screened those that were arrested and set free anyone who was able to explain clearly what he/she was doing in the areas that particular hour, and the type of work he/she is engaged in. But those without cogent reason of being where they were raided and could not satisfactorily explain why they were there, were detained for further investigation.
“Many people close from work and arrive home late between 10 – 12pm. It is therefore unreasonable to ask people not to move within those hours while going about their legal activities.”
But contrary to what the police officer said, one of the residents of numbers 519/521 Ikorodu road, Ketu, who identified himself as Mr. Friday Akikiriki alleged that his cousin, Mr. Alani Oladipupo was illegally arrested outside their family compound at 10pm, by a police team led by the DPO of Ketu Police Station, when he (Alani) was seated and receiving fresh air due to constant power outage and heat inside their apartment.
He said, “I demanded to know the offence committed by my brother that warranted his arrest outside our compound, and the police said they don’t want to be seeing people sitting outside by 10pm. The annoying part is that they even came into our house and pointed torch into various rooms to harass people who were already sleeping.
“I paid N5,000 (Five Thousand naira) to bail my brother, while some other people paid N10,000 (Ten Thousand naira) to bail each of their relatives that were arrested during the illegal entry and harassment of innocent citizens in their own compound.”
However, the DPO was not available during the facts finding mission.
